Notices.

(Entries are in chronological order - latest notice received first.)

  1. A slideshow of photos kindly supplied by members of Penrith Ramblers was added on 17th Jan. 2012

  2. BEWARE A SCAM! The latest way to place malware on your computer is to try to get you to put it on yourself. A person pertaining to be from Microsoft rings you and asks if your computer is slow to boot up or download files.
The webmaster understands that if you say 'Yes' to their question, the caller suggests that you download and install some special software to cure the problem.
DONT DO IT! This software will almost certainly fail to cure the problem and will probably contain spyware which surreptitiously reports back on your computer's use and attempts to steal sensitive information such as your banking details and your internet username and password. The programme may also include viruses causing your start up to become even slower and some of your programmes to malfunction.
Microsoft does not make cold calls.
The webmaster knows of this scam, because such a scam was recently tried (unsuccessfully) on him. The BBC has also reported it. (11th January, 2012.)

  3. The walks' programme for January to April 2012 has been added. (20th November 2011)

  4. A set of Penrith Ramblers Photos has been added for October 2011. Unfortunately, insufficient photos were received from members to make up the usual full set. Please may we have more regular contributors, each sending more photos, otherwise the time between adding new sets will have to increase or even cease altogether. (9th Oct. 2011)

  5. A survey form has been added to the website. This allows visitors to give information on which pages they have visited and which facilities they have used on this website. They can also make comments. To prevent malware, the form is first validated before it is submitted to the webmaster. (5th Oct. 2011)

  6. Now that the sets of photographs stored on the website 'fotopic.net' cannot be viewed, because the parent company, 'Snappy Designs' has ceased trading, sets of photos used in previous slideshows have been put back on this web site, together with reconstructed sets to cover the times before the slideshow facility was available. Go to the web page, 'Penrith Ramblers Photos', to view them.

  7. A form to report problems on public rights of way, such as obstructions and/or defects, has been posted for your use. The Path Problem Report Form, is sent automatically to our Footpaths Secretary once it has been completed satisfactorily.

A deposit of £20 per person is required at the time of booking, either in cash or by cheque (made payable to 'Penrith Ramblers') and should be paid to Sarah Cantrell. The final balance of £166 per person will be payable 14 days prior to arrival (ie. 16th March 2012) by cheque (made payable to 'Bower House Inn Ltd') or by debit/credit card over the phone and should be paid direct to the hotel.

There will be a full programme of walks over the weekend. We will be occupying the whole hotel, but spaces are limited so an early reservation would be advisable.

  9. The handbook of walks, "Walks in the Penrith area" produced by Graham Allan and Mike Cooper is still available. Sales are going very well.
It is an ideal gift for those who like walking - or those considering doing so!
See the section 'Walking Related Adverts' below for more information. (Posted 7th April 2011)

  10. The Footpath secretary, Alan Duval works much in the background on Footpaths and Rights of Way issues for the Penrith Group. If anyone is interested in helping with this work, then Alan would be happy to show them the ropes. A suggestion is to split the Penrith Group's area into three and have a footpath secretary to deal with each area. For more information, please contact Alan by telephone on 017684 83727 or by e-mail using this link:
Contact Footpath Secretary. (Original message amended July 2010)

  11. Derek Patmore has provided a plan, devised by a friend of his, for ramblers to complete the 'Coast to Coast' walk from St Bees to Robin Hood in easy stages of no more than 12 miles at a time. The plan splits the 189 miles walk, which goes through three National Parks, (Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors), into 20 stages. Each stage can be completed after suitable intervals of your choice. However because of logistics, it may be necessary to complete some stages on successive days with intervening overnight stays. You will need 2 cars and at least 2 drivers and no more passengers than will fit in one car.
Details of the stages are given in the pdf * file Coast to Coast in Easy Stages.
The walk is based on Alfred Wainwrights book, 'A Coast to Coast walk - a Pictorial Guide', which is a reference well worth having.

    * You will need a PDF reader.    If you are without, you can get free software from:
Adobe Reader, (size 46MB for Windows XP +SP3), i.e. comprehensive but massive! or
Foxit Reader, (7.66MB with the option to choose free extra 'add-ons' to supplement its performance, such as improved graphics and editing and printing facilities.) or
Sumatra PDF 1.5.1, (small, fast, a no frills basic reader with no editing or creation facilities).

 Walks in the Penrith area
by Graham Allan & Mike Cooper

This book has received national plaudits in the Ramblers magazine 'Walk'.

*******
The Penrith Ramblers Group has selected 30 good walks of various grades to celebrate its first 25 years as one of Ramblers successful and busy walking groups. All the walks featured in the book are within easy reach of Penrith, one of the most easily accessible market towns in Cumbria. The walks are divided into five colour coded groupings, four of which are related to notable valley locations in the eastern part of the area.

The groupings, shown on the plan are:

Ullswater & the Eamont valley, 10 walks,

The Lowther valley,
6 walks,

The Eden valley, 7 walks,

Countryside north & west of Penrith, 4 walks,

Leith & Lyvennet valleys.
3 walks.

Map showing location of walks.

'Walks in the Penrith Area' is of A5 size (210mm x 160mm) and is spiral bound making it easy to have any walk description open to view. The 180 pages include detailed descriptions for each walk, accompanied by good, clear OS based mapping from the 1:25,000 scale Explorer series. More than 250 photographs from the walks have been provided along with a wealth of 'points of interest'.
Following a route of a walk is made easy through the division of the route into sections. These can be identified by the accompanying map. A 'factfile' gives information for each walk about local services available and any available public transport facilities.

If you like walking or are considering walking in the Penrith area, the Eastern Lakes or within the Eden Valley and you have not yet got a copy, then

why not treat yourself?  The books would also make good presents.
